Welcome to your new Nokia 770!

Since it's a good bet that many people will get new Nokia Internet Tablets this week, this post is a list of things that new owners should enjoy

First of all: Congratulations on obtaining the best (as determined by me) pocketable web browsing device ever. Not only will you have hours of enjoyment simply browsing the web, but you also have one of the most flexible, hackable, and extensible handheld devices on the market.

Things you should know:
  • What is Maemo?
  • Where do I get software? The linked software list gives you either a direct download location for each of these apps or lists a "repository." To use a repository, add it to your "Application Installer" program.
  • What is a repository? Developers for Linux and other related operating systems often distribute software from a "repository." When the software is updated or upgraded, users simply upgrade all their software at once using their package manager instead of having to hunt down the software packages individually.
  • What version of the Nokia 770 do I have? The short answer: If your background is orange when you first turn it on, it's the 2006 release. If it is blue and grey, it's the 2005 release and you should upgrade to the 2006 version.
What's the must-have software?
Most applications are free, and there are some fantastic ones out there. In addition to the integrated web browser and RSS feed reader, check out:

Very nicely done, sir. I've enjoyed your 770-to-laptop hack, your 770-in-car hack, etc. I wish this last post had been there when I first got my 770! Keep up the great work, and Happy Holidays!

Good post ThoughtFix; great Idea to provide the link before the Christmas holidays. I believe another interesting application to instal is Media Streamer. https://garage.maemo.org/projects/mediastreamer Media Streamer enables the Nokia 770 to act as a UPnP Media Player and/or Controller.

I am very hopefull that future Canola development will add UPnP Controller and on the fly playlist creation to it many talents as its a wonderful smart looking application; until that time Media Streamer is better for those who are immediately interested in UPnP Media streaming to a UPnP Renderer and using the Nokia 770 to control events.

More info can be found at http://mikesl300i.blogspot.com/

PS Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year.

Thanks, ThoughtFix. I just got an 770 about a month ago, and I'm looking forward to exploring the platform. This post is great for some direction.

Thanks! I just got a 770 for Christmas, and love it except for one thing. I've got a T-Mobile MDA with the $30 unlimited data plan. I can't get Bluetooth DUN working on it. I can pair with the phone, but when I choose it under "Select Connection" it either gives me an "Internet connection failed. Try again?" message or never times out at all. My laptop can use the MDA via Bluetooth DUN just fine, so it isn't that the phone has DUN disabled.

I've tried everything I can find, such as your new (http://thoughtfix.blogspot.com/2006/07/nokia-770-windows-mobile-smartphone.html) tutorial and even the old (http://thoughtfix.blogspot.com/2006/02/howto-nokia-770-pairing-with-windows.html) old one which replaced the icd. When I do the latter, hitting "Select Connection" doesn't work at all, so I can't even use Wi-Fi.

I've got the latest OS 2006 version (2.2006.39-14). Is there a different ICD I should try besides the one at qapf.shackspace.com?

I realize this is not the best place to post this question, but all of the other discussions on the subject seem to have died out.

OK, just in case it helps any other new 770 owners, I finally got Bluetooth DUN working on my T-mobile MDA. The
"Mobile operator setup wizard..." for T-mobile enabled the "Use PPP compression" option. Turning that off did the trick.

Great post ThoughtFix! Talking about browsing the web with this great device, you should try http://www.gamoku.com - you can play free online Flash games. Have not try it on the new N800. Cheers.

Question about USB, what kind of bandwidth does the device have? -- e.g. what transfer speed do you get transferring from external storage?

Also, have you tried to plug in a usb camera? -- I would like to get this thing for my car and connect a usb webcam to it to use as a rear view camera.
