The 770, the future, and the forbidden hack

As was announced yesterday (and commented upon moments ago Dr. Jaaksi's blog) there is effort being made to take as many features as possible from OS2007 and make them available on the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet. This is going to be called "OS2007/770 Hacker Edition" and mostly be targeted toward developers to bridge the gap between OS2006 and OS2007. He also mentions a test version of a new application catalog.

I know there is a lot of complaining going on with how many improvements from OS2007 will not be available on the 770. In my research, it seems that OS2007 is just too optimized for the N800's hardware that it is silly to try to run it all on the Nokia 770. Even seeing all the improvements in OS2007, I still think OS2006 makes the Nokia 770 work exactly as it's supposed to.

I mean come on! Would anyone expect to run Windows XP on their Nokia 770 or Nokia N800 Internet Tablet? No?

Well then: Watch this video.

So you see, people. Just because an operating system is newer or more advanced doesn't mean it's the right fit for the hardware.

Wow! Do you really are running XP ON 770 hardware? Aren't you connecting to a PC with Windows XP with Tablet Edition through VNC Viewer or something like that?

I want to believe the first one is true. It would be nice, not because of being Windows XP but because of the possibility of running other OS on the 770 hardware.

Best regards.

Ah, very clever....
rdesktop in full screen mode then?

Remote desktop?

I disagree completely. If they can't release a 2007 OS for the 770 to consumers, this "hacker edition" is damn near useless. Maemo is no longer a "platform". Developers will have to release multiple versions of their software to support both devices, but most will be unwilling to do that. Nokia has now established that they are abandoning the 770. Honestly, I'm surprised at you ThoughtFix; this is obviously a sign of things to come. I for one won't be buying any more Nokia products.

Are you using VNC here?

Shenanigans! VNC I say!

I wonder if anyone noticed that the Software icon at Internet Tablet Talk links to the new test repository?

So what is your point ?

"You still have a 770 ? You suck ! You shouldn't even think about running the n800 os on it !"

Well, no, I don't suck.

And you know what ? I won't buy a new device just 4 months after my purchase of the 770 just because nokia did feel that they had to screw me :)

(Ok, I know they didn't want to screw people, but well... they started new marketing campaigns for the 770 just months ago, knowing very well that they had a revamp coming, which was much better for nearly the same price)

Now, about running the n800 os on the 770, yeah I want it. There are great improvements in it.
Whatever you can say I want the n800 os on my 770.

Why ? Because I feel that as a customer having paid 350€ I have the right to continue to have a lot of apps to use 4 months afterward.

It's a really bad move from the nokia guys.

what about VNC?

No clue how you faked that. I guess playing a video and clicking on the same spots.

That's just... wrong.

Thanks for saying something at ITT forums -- I've passed by this several times thinking it was a video of IT OS2007 running on the 770!

Since you say "it's running" or something like that, it seems clear that you're not just displaying from some actual Windows machine, a la VNC.

So, what, are you running WINE or some other emulator?

Don't tell us -- but give us some more hints!

And show us Word or something equally horrifying, please!

Nice full screen, no toolbars VNC demo video. :D Still cool, none the less.

Hey Thoughtfix,

Looks to me that you are using VNC in fullscreen mode. "Sound isn't working"--well, maybe that's because sound isn't supported by VNC's rfb protocol. Plus, it looks like the desktop might not be quite the right size--did you resize your tablet PC's desktop to 800x600? :-)

Well, if you do admit to using VNC viewer, a little publicity would be nice :-)

I love my N800 and Nokia better not *EVER* release a new machine with more features and apps that I can't run on my baby because if they do I'll hold my breath until I turn blue and boy will they ever be sorry. I might forgive them if they buy mine back for what I paid and give me a free one to ease the pain. Otherwise they suck, got it? OK! Oh, and if you agree, you're cool and if not, you suck too. OK? OK!!!

Of *course* it's rdesktop/VNC :-)

(with USB networking to avoid any wifi latency issues :-))

Actually, I bet the USB thing, in this case, is just a gimmick to make viewers think it has something to do with Windows "running" on the device. You can easily get that type of responsiveness with VNC viewer over wifi. Any lack of responsiveness is primarily due to the 770's/N800's hardware limitations, not the bandwidth.

Given the blocking when scrolling the webpage, I put my money on VNC. (versus RDP)

I know what this is

LOL

But on a more serious note, isn't this how things should be? Thin clients used to be the only way to fit out an office so why not have an unlimited HSDPA connection to a home pc, mounted to a local FS on a tablet.

Tiny portable unit, loads of battery life, linked to a PC that does all the hard work.

Way of the future...
