The kind people at BoxWave were nice enough to send me the N800 FlexiSkin for review. This unit is available direct from BoxWave for US$20.95 as of this writing. It is available in three different colors: Frosted Clear, Jet Black, and Smoke Grey.

Initially, I was impressed that the FlexiSkin was clearly very specifically made for the N800. Too many PDA or device cases are made for a “class” or “size” of device and not for very specific makes and models. Given the molding and design of the case, this easily qualifies as the “lowest bulk” of any currently available case for the N800 – even tighter than the included suede slip-case.

Installation took only seconds: The N800 gets stuffed into the big opening for the screen and then the case simply gets stretched around the N800. The countors, buttons, and cut-outs all fit perfectly.

The soft rubber is not high texture. I find this to be preferable because I carry my N800 in either a jeans pocket or jacket pocket. High texture rubber cases make it difficult to get the device in and out of pockets without turning them inside out. The downside to this, of course, is that it does not provide a great deal more slippage protection. If you set this on your dashboard, you can turn a LITTLE sharper without it flying off – but not much.

The protection it offers is best described as “moderate dings and scuffs.” You don’t have to worry about scratching your N800’s beautiful metallic face, but don’t get to look at it either. The most fragile outward part of the N800 appears to be the stand and that is entirely closed in by the FlexiSkin.
There is no included screen protection with this. I am paranoid about my LCDs and picky about screen responsiveness and quality so generally go without additional screen covers, but active users should seek out a screen protector. I can tell why BoxWave doesn’t include one: They have two options for screen protection based on user preference: Their ClearTouch line offers either the Crystal for 99% screen transparency or the Anti-Glare for those who often use their tablets in bright environments. Plenty of information on both can be found by Google searching for BoxWave ClearTouch Review.
Pro:
- Lightweight and low bulk.
- Unhindered access to stylus, webcam, screen, microphone, speakers, and all buttons.
- Low cost.
- Protection from casual damage caused by normal use.
Con:
- No screen protection included.
- Blocks stand, USB port, battery door, and SD slots.
- Does not protect against serious drops or pressure.

Everyone willing to shell out US$400 for a go-everywhere device should consider some added protection for it. The BoxWave FlexiSkin is a good place to start. It offers casual bump, scratch, and skid protection without adding to the bulk of the device. Since half of my N800 use time is at home, I find myself not using the case so much because it interferes with the stand. However, users who keep the N800 in their jacket pocket or gadget bag should consider this case and a screen cover.
Again, this case and other N800 accessories including their Designio Case are available directly through BoxWave.
