Bluetooth DUN on the Q - Fixed

I'm happy. I went a whole week without my N800 in my pocket and I missed having Internet everywhere. I spent hours on the phone with Verizon, an hour going through automated systems at Motorola without finding a human, and did a lot of Google searching. Verizon wanted to help but couldn't because all replacement devices most likely already have the AKU3 update in place. Also, they don't "officially support" Bluetooth DUN and even mid-level techs aren't trained on it.

I decided that the best course of action was to try to put the AKU2 update back on my Motorola Q. This is no easy task. First of all, the Motorola installer checks online to see if the latest version is downloaded. Then it's smart enough to check to see if the manually downloaded version is older than the version on the device. This is very good behavior for most users, but not for someone who wants to downgrade. I really couldn't find anything rolling back to AKU2 from AKU3.

I am putting the steps below for posterity. It is only for the Verizon Motorola Q. I do not suggest anyone attempt this and I did not take notes DURING the procedure, but this is what works to the best of my recollection:
  1. Install ActiveSync 4.5, backup your phone, and save everything you need.
  2. Download the Motorola Update installer.
  3. Find and download a file called MSU_VZW_STAND_ALONE_FIRMWARE_MOL_1.msi
  4. Install both, in that order.
  5. Disconnect your computer from the Internet. (this prevents it from finding newer versions)
  6. Make sure your Motorola Q is charged fully.
  7. Unplug the phone and turn off the phone
  8. Put it into Flash mode by holding A and Enter while the phone is off and plug in the USB cable.
  9. Run the Motorola updater. It should take 25-45 minutes depending.
That's what worked for me.
This link was helpful. So was this one.

Did you ever try to get PAN to work?

As you know, on the ITOS side everything is there except the GUI (and the commands you must run in the terminal are extremely simple, as seen in the maemo.org bluetooth howto).

It would be nice to know if Verizon lets PAN-capable phones actually use PAN...

So could I buy a original silver motoQ and flash the correct firmware to tether it to my 770? I was using a samsung i730 to tether to my nokia but it died. Neither my treo 700wx nor my pantech pn820 will connect to it. I'd sell both if I knew for sure I could get a Q to do it.

A step is missing but I cannot figure out what.

I followed the instructions, but both times I got this message:

Your mobile device already has the latest available software. Please check back for new releases.
