Build Your Own Internet Tablet

The N800 is only seven months old, but with the release of the recent firmware and the the rumors (however dubious) of a next-generation tablet already in prototype, we cannot help but speculate on what we want out of an internet tablet.

That being the case, I solicited others in InternetTabletTalk forums to comment on my last mock-up post for suggestions on what they want out of a next-generation internet tablet. I got some good responses. Some agreed with my desires and others disagreed. Now I am inviting every reader of this blog to do the same: Comment on my mock-up post and tell me what YOU want in a third-generation internet tablet. If you have picture mock-ups, Email them to my Gmail (subject: N800 mockup) along with your name and, if you'd like, link to your own site. I will post them in a follow-up post or simply add them to that post.

What do you want? A slider like the mock-up? A clamshell like the Nokia Communicator? A slate like the N800? Built-in Flash or just dual SD card slots? A hard shell cover like on the 770? Smaller screen so it's more pocketable or bigger bezel so it's more comfortable in the hands? There are so many potential ways to develop this. My design would have been EXPENSIVE but perfect for me. What's your perfect tablet?

Some of the sketches I present below were drawn before even the N800 was released, and long before the rumors of this new device.

Here is one that has two different concepts. One is more of a "phone type" with game centric button layout, and the other is an "all screen" concept.

Here is one idea that looks familiar. this was drawn by myself shortly after the N800 was released.

And here is my favorite idea showing a tablet with more buttons, multi-functional use cases, and an outline (light blue) of what a clear hard plastic case might look like.

Again, these drawings are rather old, but still pretty relevant.

A touchscreen that's flush with the front panel and can be activated by touching it without applying pressure. (What an iPhone has, as far as I can tell from the videos.)

Longer battery life. More polish of the software.

1. Need to have functions of GP2X or XGP to be used for gaming - Will be fun
2. Need to have finger touch interface similar to iphone - Stylus is difficult to use
3. Browser should be fast and good - Probably can work with firefox or opera guys
4. Need to have inbuilt GPS - Optional
5. Need to have hard case - So it will be hard to break
6. Faster processor - optional
7. S-Video output - Mandatory for browsing pages and watching movies in TV
8. High resolution camera

I'm a big fan of Internet Tablet so I made my own Tablet Design. I want it BLACK!

So Here it is!

1. Switchable between usb host and client

2. daylight readable screen (not "pretend" daylight readable)

3. vga or dvi or hdmi out (or usb host + sisusb driver to allow usb to vga) (NOT crappy, low-res s-video or composite! plenty of small devices offer that noise!)

4. no other hardware changes, so as to keep the cost and size down!

how do you get AIM on the n800?

I want USB charging. But I would also like a simple, optional plastic cradle like this (keep the integrated stand too). The USB charger plugs into the cradle and there are two charging contacts on the bottom of the device. Gravity makes the connection. This allows the device to be picked up and set down quickly without fumbling to unplug the charger. On the road just leave the cradle at home.

Biggest wish: True PIM ability, a clock that will sound alarms for impending appointments from a dormant state. Other than that I *LOVE* my 800. A 770-style hard case would be nice, and better integration of multimedia into browser would be nice too. I have no regrets about buying an 800, it's better than I had expected, but with a real clock I'd be able to dump my hated (but needed) axim.

I commented already in the previous thread, but I'm adding some more here (and summarizing the ones I suggested earlier already):

I would like a vibrator, like the one I have in my Palm T3 and all my phones. Now with Skype and Google Talk and whatnot of incoming, real-time interactive connections, I have a hard time hearing the little sound(s) when I carry the N800 in an inside pocket in my jacket when I'm out and about.

Summary:
- Start with an N800, I like the design as it is. So, let's think of it as an N800+.

1) Improve the video bandwidth.
2) Replace the screen with a transflective screen (useable outdoors and in sunlight), if that can be done without sacrificing the qualities of the current screen.
3) Add a vibrator (and apps. could be configured to use it in addition to or instead of specific notification sounds)
4) A hardware button for rotating screen landscape portrait/landscape (and config prefs. for left or right, left- and right-handed people may want it differently). This would also trigger an event that applications can use to reconfigure itself accordingly. Not all apps will handle this at first, don't worry -- nor did the Palm T3 (320x480) applications at first either.

The above is hardware, a lot of stuff can be improved in software but there's no need to cover that here - no new hw is needed for most of that.
