Remember this? That post links to a high resolution scan of the Nokia N800 PCB with the chips soldered on. Inspired by a reader, I decided to look again into all the chips and see what is there. Rumors of an unused feature in hardware still bounce around.
In any case, here's what the breakdown was:
Previously identified: USB OTG controller and power manager, touchscreen controller, level translater, FM stereo receiver, WLAN, and bluetooth chips. See the original post for that.
After that:
- The USB On-The-Go controller may not be for the USB port at all. I see no other chip for camera control, so the camera's IC may be USB and just go right into the USB OTG controller.
- The big Samsung chip is probably the flash memory.
- The chip labelled "Betty" is not exciting. Part of Nokia's BB5 set, it's just a component power manager.
- The same holds true for the 4396299 chip: BB5 audio manager
- The Epson chip pictured above is a total mystery. I can't find anything on it unless I go page-by-page on Epson's semiconductor site looking for a PDF named 506356
- There is a covered chip in the centermost block that is also a mystery.

Surely we're not thinking there's already a WiMax transceiver in there and we just haven't noticed until now? I know the FM receiver was a surprise, but a WiMax chip would add some manufacturing expense, and with the WiMax standards not concrete, the tablet might have interoperability problems and no way to fix them. OTOH, I'm tablet newbie, what do I know?
epson chip is the lcd controller as far as I know. Check if it exists on 770 as well.
I read on the developer ML that the camera was using a I2C connector, so surely no usb.
According to the schematics found here, the Epson chip is definitely the display controller.
drivers/video/omap/blizzard.c in the kernel lists s1d13744 (Blizzard) and s1d13745 (Hailstorm) as the two possible display controllers, and has 'Epson Blizzard LCD controller driver' in the header; make of that what you will.
Epson is the LCD controller.
So the other chip is ______?
I think that the USB thingy is still a mystery though. I was thinking along the same lines as the camera connector, but the schematics made me think otherwise.
Hoping to start development with the N800 some point soon.
You know - it'd be great if Darkfader gets one...I bet we'll find out a helluva lot more about hidden innards!
Has anyone ever noticed how solid the N800 is? Unfortunately, a car just drove over mine a couple of days ago, and the LCD screen broke in two places. The touch-screen still works, as well as all the hardware, and except for the two black lines on the LCD, there is no other visible damage, and the software works like a charm, just like the wifi, buth sd, audio bluetooth, charging and usb.
I would imagine that if it fell with the screen downwards, nothing would have happened.
I guess I should mention that it was a pretty light car (by American standards anyway), the Toyota Prius.
I am curious if and where I can replace my LCD. Can I order one? I have the guts to replace-it by myself.
Cheers,
Razvan
You can order one here: http://www.handyersatzteilshop.de , but you have to email them beforehand if your are outside Europe. Just search for n800 and go through the list of parts...
