With the latest release of HandBrake and the improvements of Konttori's Media Converter, it's easy to get a DVD on to the Nokia 770 or Nokia N800. The screen shots are for Mac, but the same software is available on Windows.
First, rip the DVD using Handbrake to an MPEG-4 AVI with MP3 audio. Attempting to rip it to an .MP4 file H.264/AAC as shown above didn't work, but ripping it to an .AVI worked fine. In short- make sure your settings match this paragraph, not the screen shot.
Once the movie is ripped, use the Media Converter to optimize it for your internet tablet. Since I am using an N800, I set it with default N800 settings. I am quite pleased with the results - as can be shown in image on the top of this article. This took hours on an Intel Core2 Duo 2.0 iMac, as these rippers/recoders are not multithreaded and video recoding is an intensive operation. However, with a dual core CPU it is possible to rip one film while re-coding another. Set it up and go to bed. When you wake up, just copy the file to a memory card.
Se7en (as shown in widescreen above) is 2 hours, 6 minutes long and takes 528M on my memory card. Remember to only do this with movies you own (and not your latest NetFlix rental) as this kind of backup may be a violation of copyright law. Check your local laws.

i may be missing something, but why not create a preset in HandBrake and rip/encode in one step?'
Obviously, if you want the DVD in a high quality format, and in an N800 format, you'll have to do it twice, but just using one app seems easier then using two (especially when they can't be pipelined easily... though maybe the second app has a good AppleScript dictionary).
I'll figure that out this week and post a howto for Mac and Windows.
Hi, great idea - I always wanted to give it a try, but was to lazy to actually search for the programs and codecs...
However, where can I download the 770 Video converter for Mac OS X in the Intel version? The link on the homepage is broken. :(
Nice post - I like these very useful HowTos
from you.
I only wish you could add a HowTo for Linux Desktop Users, because most of the Nokia 770/800 geeks like it because they have Linux on their desktop AND to go with the Nokia.
So I think it would be very nice if you could add a 'Convert videos innn x steps under Linux'.
No matter if ubuntu, redhat or so on....
Thanks for your nice postings so far and
good lick with your new company!

Ditto on the linux request,
Best Regards.
I know this is out of topic, but I need to ask you something. I've watched your Orb's demonstrations on youtube and what I see is a completely different web interface that I have.
Here I have an ugly made-for-fingers interface with no possibility to change the streaming speed.
Thanks in advance!
Have you tried to convert a movie with sub-titles?
Ups! I found it! I should try the Settings page more often :P
hi, i've seen that you have the navigation kit, me too, i have the ld-3w, but i've lost my SD with the navicore installation, and i can't find it in internet, can you send it to mee please? you are my last chance. Thanks very much
I am actually searching for a all-in-one pda. I knew about the n800 though. I want to ask if it has applications or programs that is similar to microsoft office? If none, is there a possibility of installing it?
Thank you so much!
Loraine
Hi:
I enjoyed your video on the Nokia N800--wow, what an amazing piece of technology!! I ordered mine yesterday, and can't wait to get it in the mail!
I had a quick question for you: what do you think is the Best Portable Bluetooth Keyboard for the Nokia N800? I'd like to be able to bring both on the road and be able to touch-type, without having to hunt and peck!
Thanks for any advise you can throw my way!
Doug
Maybe I just missed it, but does this work for the 770?
When I tried this, Handbrake refused to access the DVD due to the copy protection. What program are you using to decrypt the disk so Handbrake can rip it?
Try using Fair Use Wizard, then use Media Converter to format the .avi. that's what I used instead of HandBrake and it works fine with my DVDs. Just converted the Matrix Trilogy and got the first one through Media Converter with no problems.
Note to you Linux users like myself, both applications are available for Linux and are GPL. Although I have not tried them yet I would think you can do the same thing with dvd::rip and transcode. for those that do not know transcode is a command line video encoder and dvd::rip is a gui for transcode, however it is designed to rip a dvd and not simply re-encode a existing video file. There is also simple support in k3b, the kde burning software, for dvd ripping without many of the features you would want to format for the nokia 770/n800.
if you're still working on the Handbrake/Media Converter integration, let me know...I worked quite a bit on this, and didn't get it completely working. However, I do know a few things about it.
