In-Car Demo of the N810's GPS

The full version of the Wayfinder application was preinstalled in my pre-release N810 model. I didn't intend this video to go on for 17 minutes, but had a lot to show.

This isn't a review - just a live demonstration. Hope you enjoy it. I'll answer any questions that appear in the comments.

Have you been considering your entry to win an N810 of your own?

On a final note, I chatted with Ricky of Symbian-Guru in his podcast today. It was a good conversation.

OK, it's preproduction, but how about a side by side comparison with the N800 (and navicore 2007) and maybe a standalone (TomTom, Garmin, ...).
Btw the traffic-info was available in Navicore 2007 (at least for Germany).

any way to change from yards to miles? Also any way to get street names on map like navteq?

I can kinda put up with turn at next intersection but any way to get it to say street name?

Like idea of side by side cpmparison

how much does navicore charge for upgrade kit with turn by turn directions? Cannot find it on their website and what is the name of that company that sells mounts to fit the N810 for specific cars. Couldn't understand it when you said it on vid.

found upgrade info at wayfinder.com - looks like $129 US

Hello. First, nice 810 info this week. I can't believe how little nokia is releasing on this. I have a question on your GPS review. First, does the backlight stay on when the unit is plugged in and using Wayfinder? It was a little hard to tell in the video. Second, did you ever get any traffic info? I called Wayfinder and they say their is not traffic data for the US. I am not sure if they are making any changes for the n810 release. They are charging about 30% more than usual for this version so they may have made some changes. Finally, does the unit have maps stored or does it stream them all (i.e. requires a data connection)? The previous versions of Wayfinder would leave you stranded if you ever hit a dead cell reception area.

continues from above....

Thanks in advance for the answers to my questions. As a user of TomTom I can say this 810 version is only slightly less powerful than the standalone I have. I think the convenience of the all in one nokia is more than worth losing a few features. Also, the TomTom screen is unreadable in direct sun and also takes a few minutes to start the GPS. The realtime traffic is kind of a big deal, though. Especially because Wayfinder charges an ongoing subscription. (what do we get for out fees?).

Nice video! Thanks :)

Have you determined how well the N810's battery holds up to active GPS hardware?

WHat's actually available after the trial from wayfinder? I just wanna know if it justifies to payfor the wayfinder 3 year subscription. DO you need internet to get the route?WHat would you get without the subcription?
Thanks again, Dan

@Above

Based on Wayfinder's website, the free version will be similar to google maps. Flat 2D maps, no routing, no POI, no traffic data, no voice guide.

Hope that helps.

I would love to get some more info on the functionality in the US. Wayfinder is aimed heavily at Europe/UK, I have had bad experiences with the wayfinder client on my cell phone.

Does anyone know why the Wayfinder license for the n810 is subscription based, while the license for every other Wayfinder client is lifetime (pay once). It does not seem that there is any difference in functionality.

It would be so great to not have to carry multiple devices, but I don't want to sacrifice, or pay, to much more.

I think I recall you showing us a light sensor in the N810...why doesn't the navigation software automatically change lighting settings based on the ambient light conditions?

Great demo as usual! Question: have you tried the N810 GPS in the "walk" mode? I'm curious at how much details are revealed on street level as compared to "driving" mode...or it all looks the same. I plan to use the GPS while walking in an unfamiliar city/town. Thanks!

another request for name of company that makes the cradle that holds the N810....or does it have a nokia part number? It looks real similar to the cradle that came with the Navicore GPS Kit for the N800.

Any options to change the voice? I don't like the one you were using at all.

Dan I know you are one busy guy but could try to answer some of our questions occasionally?

Name of company is proclipusa.com

I personally do not care for the voice prompts but I am used to a Garmin which says "in 2/10 of a mile turn right at Maple Street" but Wayfinder says "At next intersection TURN LEFT!" Any way to get wayfinder to say name of street instead of next intersection, end of road, next right etc.

At least the interface is a huge upgrade from your review of the N800 GPS kit. The N810 is a far superior interface.
