Third tablet gets a name: the Nokia N810

Some press people are wonderful. I've talked to a good number of them (you know who you are) and they are very helpful to me. Some are terrible - like the ones who drafted this press release for Island Def Jam and mSpot.

Sure - I like the fact that Nokia is working with others to promote their MOSH service, but the PR people on the other side shouldn't have been so casual in saying that Nokia will be showcasing their "new Nokia N810 Internet Tablet" on October 23. Of course, they don't say they'll be "launching" or "announcing" the device at that time, so that will still likely happen sooner. Hope they don't get sued for such an "oops."

There it is, dear readers. Absolute confirmation that the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet will be here by the end of the month. Excited?

I tried to download the N810 manual from nodevice.com but it was mistakenly mislabeled. The actual manual they had was for the old Nokia 810 carphone kit. I contacted them about it and very quickly they contacted me back, thanking me for the correction, and offering to hunt it down and provide it when it arrives. It was nice of them to own up to the mistake and I like their attitude.

OH! Let me not forget that I did a guest piece for NeonCherry's "Tablet School" video blog! She is doing quite well in making HOWTOs for tablet beginners. My contribution was a quick video HOWTO on getting all your Google Reader subscriptions into your N800 RSS reader. Watch Tablet School!

Built in hardware keyboard and GPS? Sign me up. My beloved N800 just went obsolete overnight :)

I'm loving this. There are so many possible projects out there that'll work so much better with an available hardware keyboard and I expect the talented chap porting Ultima IV will be pretty happy :)

And best of all the name does tend to indicate that the N800 isn't being discarded like the N770 was.

Keep up the good work ThoughtFix. I'll be glued to your blog until the announcement. My credit card is definately on standby

Actually there's already a Nokia product labeled with the "N810" reference.
It's a ...carphone , and I guess it's still being sold these days.

An attempt to insert a url of the specified product below.

Maybe as someone said on the ITT forum it might just have been a typo.

I don't think it is a Typo - most people I know use the top row of number keys to enter short number sequences, and not the numblock.

And on the top row, 0 and 1 are a bit too far away from each other for a simple typo I'd say (obviously just guessing of course) ;)

The text says "the new Nokia N810 internet tablet", which does imply that this will be a... well, a new internet tablet. I wouldn't describe the N800 as being new, although I suppose people who write these press releases wouldn't necessarily know much about the mobile device scene.

I've had so much use out of my N800 this year I'm drooling at the thought of getting a better one.

Looks like the N800/N810 will remain unchallenged in the '800x480 handheld computer' category for at least a few months.

This offers a limited timeframe for Nokia and the Maemo community to outgrow their 'one-trick pony' image. The newbie videos and your blog are certainly helpful in this regard.

Will Nokia continue to market with a narrow 'tablet' focus, or begin to emphasize broader capabilities?:

- Expanded gps+map/navigation services (subscription model?)

- Improved PIM/schedule capability (GPE, Evolution?)

- Improved online document (ajax/google) and browsing experience (Microb, Minimo?)

- Mail (builtin, claws, ..?),

- Chat/IM (Pidgin, ..?),

- Voice/Video (Skype, .?)

- Lightweight offline productivity (Maemopad+, MTPaint, Abiword, Spreadsheet)

- Rich media clients (canola, kagu, ukmp), mediaserver integration (like knots, upnp, mythclient)

- Java

- Portable gaming (opengl, dpad improvements, commercial game licenses).

While some people seem to expect Nokia to bundle best-of-breed apps in several of these categories, this is completely unrealistic.

I think the winning strategy will be for Nokia to a) to make incremental improvements to the core apps (internet-centric), while expanding hardware and driver capabilities in order to attract a broader developer base.

That device labeled an "N810" on some sites is really the "Nokia 810" car phone has some have reported elsewhere.

And yeah, nice work Thoughtfix! :D

The only thing that could still go "wrong" would be that this N810 is "just" a N800 with WiMax... Not that would be bad! :)

But if everthing goes perfectly, it will be the completely new one, ALSO with WiMax.. I gather that (WiMax) has not been confirmed either way yet, right?

Hello everyone,
I was wondering what peoples' opinions are for buying the N810 vs iPod touch.
I know it depends on what I 'm looking for (media vs. applications), as I continue to do quite a bit of research.

I know that the n800 has had problems playing video (youtube)& generally the interface is a little more difficult to navigate & adding applications isn't quite "click & download" yet.
I have no background in Linux

What is drawing me more to wait & see what the n810 has to offer is the fact that it is open application, Skype, VIOP. I was wondering what any of the n800 users that use these applications think about them? Does it chop up when talking? How often do you use it? Is it practical?

On another website it said (from FCC application) that this new n810 will have a smaller screen (similar to the iPod touch). On the n800 can you zoom on webpages like the ipod touch?

Is there any difference in battery life? I know that the ipod touch will last about 22hrs just playing music. I'm not sure about n800 & current battery (& its comparison to others)

Price & HD space also play a factor, I hope that in the n810 there will be more space for how much you are paying. I don't mind buying xpandable HD drives but not @ $90 for 8 GB x2.
Any thoughts suggestions would be great.
thanks ahead of time!

james, what website said the next tablet's screen size would be smaller? I don't recall seeing that in the FCC specs.

Hey the release date is only a few ays before the release of the new OSX operating system. I guess Nokia will make the news... and be drawn under an Apple wave!
That's a badmarketting move in my opinion.

Has anyone noticed the similarities between the fabled "n99" that doesnt exist and the new rumors about the n810?

Nokia N810 is really a new hot item. I've been waiting for a long time to see the new successor of Nokia N800. I'm sure that the next Nokia N8xx series will perform better features than the predecessor.

I've reviewed this topic on my blog at http://surayblog.blogspot.com/2007/10/nokia-n810-internet-tablet-mobile-phone.html
