The greatest advantage is clearly the Linux base. It allows a vast developer base to use a single development toolkit to use their familiar Linux knowledge to offer applications on the tablet. The tablets are interesting out of the box, but the rich application base truly show their value.
The greatest disadvantage? The Linux base. The tablets, while well received, have not been flying off the shelves as geeks like myself would expect. The reason is that Nokia cannot advertise the functionality that all these applications provide. Nokia cannot advertise that the N800 can use all popular Instant Messaging platforms. It CAN, but cannot be advertised because this is offered through third party applications Pidgin and GAIM. If a firmware update (say, Chinook) suddenly makes this software inoperable, Nokia is holding the bag on false advertising.
It is with that in mind that I am presenting 10 cool things the N800 Internet Tablet can do that Nokia can't tell you This is not for the N810 yet - we're waiting for Chinook updates. Here goes:
- Read a book! FBReader supports FB2, plain text, html, rtf, chm, and plucker format eBooks. If you need to know where to find some books, start with Project Gutenberg.
- Microblog! Mauku is a very simple, fast, and attractive Jaiku client. Stay in touch with your friends or simply watch for others' updates.
- Go Geocaching! Navicore/Wayfinder may be good for finding your way to Grandma's house, but sometimes you want to get out into nature or your urban landscape and have some fun. Use Gnuite's Maemo mapper for this one, like I did here.
- Chat with your friends! Pidgin on Maemo allows you to chat with AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Jabber, and many other buddies.
- Control your home PC! VNC and rdesktop allow you to control your PC or Mac over a wireless connection.
- Enjoy Music, Movies, and Internet Radio! Yes, this is an advertised feature of the tablet but the Canola interface takes it many steps beyond.
- Read your car's codes! With Carman and a Bluetooth ELMscan reader, you can get your car's status codes directly or add visual gauges to your vehicle. I tried it here.
- Play some games! There's a wide variety, including Sokoban, Battlegweled, and many more.
- Customize it! Theme Maker allows you to take an image of your own creation and make it into a full theme for for your tablet. Karoliina also posted some neat ring tones!
- Hack (with) it! As a regular Linux machine, xterm is available as is root access. Linux geeks can explore and customize the internals. Linux ssh and sshd can be installed in the form of the dropbear client/server. A good handful of developer tools are available, as well as several security scanners.

Hi,
Is there a word processor application that isn't basic for the Nokia N800? Please tell me. Thanks.
hi thoughtfix,
one thing that can further hinder the growth of linux tablet love, is the not so polished look of different good software - they are not end products from multimillion companies, so some might look just like hackers' pet project at the end. And this might be a turn off for a normal end-user. We, those who are excited for a new usable gadget, will just look at functionalities and be contended... but not when a normal user picks up and found the softwares too plain, or too buggy... (ahem, even the built-in Email client is kind of, urm, plain.).
only my 2 cents.
Hello Dan:
I just want to say that if it wasn't for Tabletblog and Internet Tablet Talk, the Nokia Internet Tablets would not be as known as they are today.
You make Linux programming simple to understand by applying apps in regular people's daily lives.
keep up the good work.
Regards Robert from Montreal
Great article. Had to digg it.
One comment...FBReader can read many more formats, including unencrypted Mobipocket ebooks such as those found at http://www.baen.com (Baen books).
I had no idea there was a remote desktop app, though. I have GOT to get me a IT now!
Is there any way to read copyrighted books such as those sold by eReader.com?
Greetings Dan:
It's me again Robert from Montreal.
If you haven't noticed yet there is a group in FaceBook called Nokia N810.(109 members at present)
I am the creator of this group.
You can join the group if you like.
This weekend I would like to have a WorldWide Live PodCast on SkyepCast.
I would hope you could be the host of this SkypeCast, because you have been using the N810.
Let me know if you can be part of this WorldWide Live SkypeCast that should last only one hour.
Regards Robert
11. --Get family time because of it.
Thanks to being tethered to my company 24/7 (Sr Admin) with the IT + my cell phone I can go places with my family on weekends and, as long as I have cell connectivity, reach back to fix things that need fixing. I've attended a lot of soccer games that I might not have seen if I hadn't had the IT.
@ Dwight:
No. Why would you even buy that crap?
You forgot the "organize your life" aspect of the N800! ;)
For microblogging, a tumblr blog is a great alternative to jaiku if you already use other social networking services. Just let tumblr get your feeds from other sites, and edit when you want to. Simple and elegant on a tablet. I have one running at http://jeffgrado.tumblr.com
You can also control your home using N810 - https://garage.maemo.org/projects/pluto-nokia/
