I am not the only one who took a stab at building a Nokia N800 vs. N810 comparison. Here we have:
- NeonCherry
- Tabrez
- Forum Nokia's comparison chart (at the bottom)
- NokNok.tv
On a related note, I love it when users comment with different angles on the same technology. Even when someone says "Dan, you're totally wrong because...." it helps me break my mold and expand on others' insight. If you don't read my comments from time to time, I welcome you to do so.
On a final note: The contest entries are due in two weeks! Win an N810!

I've glanced over those other "comparisons". It appears at least half of them are written by cognitive-challenged chimpanzees.
Did any of those idjits actually use any of the tablets they "compared"? I mean, I started out taking notes of the mistakes, but I quickly changed that to jotting down the occasional detail they got right.
Dear, oh dear. Not exactly the kind of references one would put on their website...
Dan. You're doing a great job there.
Keep it up.
Steve.
I know nobody outside the developers have played with OS2008 on the n800, but is it safe to assume the youtube/flash/web2.0 performance will be equal on the two devices? I'm considering upgrading my 770 but don't want to make the jump until I can get this.
Black N800 looks sexy
Hey - You should allow for the most favorite 810 feature (that is missing) poll to allow for a combination of features that are desired.
Add packages, and then let users also select a combination of features that are missing on the N810... and still have that package as a selection on your list.
I would vote for a package, as just voting on JUST the SD card slot in the poll (that I selected), does not leave me satisfied, if Nokia were to look at your data, that it would reflect my true desires.
Here is a package that I would vote for (if given the chance).
Feature Survey (for N810)?
does not give us but one choice, when there are many things that need improving on the N810.
- SD slot (got lots of em, want to use)?
- USB devices (keyboard, mouse, External Hard Drives, SD card on external USB adapter so can use my camera(s) SD cards, etc)...
- a little bigger screen (IMAP email is tough to use on this.. unless software is the problem, on the N800 I used a Maemo.org downloaded email client, and could barely use it, so one that is better, or a bigger screen, can't tell)?
- lower price (somewhere in the area of $300 for the N810, the Eee PC, and OLPC (the greatest battery use time device on the planet) are much less, in fact, over 1/2 the cost of the N810, why so expensive for the N810)? Also funny that Buy.com has the N800s for $228.99 TODAY. right now, so WE KNOW there is a huge markup going on with the N810). So, why isn't the N810, without GPS, priced at $299.00?
- to be able to use AAA batteries in the N810 and like devices (the AA 15 minute rechargeable ones are WONDERFUL for my camera, can even charge on cig-lighter in car in 15 minutes, and it would be nice to use such fast charging batteries for devices like the N810 and cell phone as well). Proprietary battery prices are a rip-off for when you tear em apart they are just AAA cell batteries in the package anyway, in most cases).
- include bluetooth keyboard in price (and that price should be $299 without GPS), as at the price Nokia is charging for this, why not throw in a FREE keyboard as you need it for serious use anyway, and Nokia's branded Bluetooth keyboard is 3 times more expensive vs the 3rd party ones that are out there... this OBVIOUS, and huge difference in pricing between Nokia Bluetooth keyboard and 3rd party ones, indicates that Nokia is ripping off their customers. Are you also ripping us off with the price of the N810?
- The whole world does not have WiFi or Cell Phone service. So, where is the ability to use a USB to Ethernet RJ45 for hooking to the internet where this is the only way that we can access it?
- THE N800 and N810 DEVICE NEEDS JAVA... otherwise it is useless for many serious web sites we all visit, administrate, and do business with.
"is it safe to assume the youtube/flash/web2.0 performance will be equal on the two devices?"
I'd say yes.
They're the same processors (apparently at the same speed, according to Nokia developers), same RAM, same OS version.
On top of that, several Nokia developers have said they're the same processor engine and run apps in exactly the same way. According to them the only differences are the external features such as the keyboard and GPS receiver.
But let's put all the arguments to one side, because there's a very easy way to test this. When OS 2008 is released we can put an updated N800 and N810 side by side and have them running the same apps and websites on the same OS.
"Also funny that Buy.com has the N800s for $228.99 TODAY. right now, so WE KNOW there is a huge markup going on with the N810)"
We know nothing of the kind, that price could well be with a minimal profit or even a loss, just to clear stock and build up interest in the platform.
Anonymous asked: "So, why isn't the N810, without GPS, priced at $299.00?"
There is no N810 without GPS. It's built in. So what are you asking there? If you're assuming the GPS is worth less than the difference of $180 USD, note that there's a built-in keyboard, too. That also adds cost.
As for your assumptions of margins, all new devices cost much more to manufacture at first than they do later on. Dropping the price on the N800 at this point is typical, and trying to draw a connection between its current price and that of the N810 is a little silly.
But, most of the cost of the N800 is built-in already to the N810, the whole unit was not a design from scratch. The Keyboard is really the only thing new (oh and it is very sad that they took away SD card, FM Tuner, and it is ok that they did something different with the battery that they needed to do for the screen brightness adjustment feature that most likely needed more power, an they changed the camera, what was wrong with the old camera design?...).
The OS, did not need redesign? NO cost there. I just think that there is a reason why the Eee PC sales sites are getting HUGE pre-order numbers, and the N800 is still on the shelves (the folks at the local CompUSA told me that there is no excitement for it as priced at $399 and not moving down like it is at buy.com, and the sales folks at CompUSA really don't know much about it, in fact, nothing at all, they can't explain the thing to me, I have tested them a few time, and they just know nothing about it really, and you can't test the wifi in the store at all to see web pages so any buyer can't get a clue either). Also- Duh, no keyboard, and priced too high. Hey - I can get an Eee PC for a base price of $299. and it has more (albiet a bit bigger). The ASUS stock went up just by the release of this product... see this Forbes article about the Eee PC

Nokia, no one is really even excited about this N-series, as it is too expensive, in my book, and I don't need a GPS, as I have never gotten lost.
I do LIKE the new keyboard, but would prefer a lower cost...so I will wait, or I will buy an Eee PC instead.
Of course any device that would use the OLPC dual mode LCD screen with it's huge power saving features is something that I would like better than either the Eee PC or the N-series (oh, the N800 that I owned and gave back to CompUSA, didn't have JAVA and so I gave it back and got a refund). I thought it was over priced then too.
Take away the GPS on the N810, and I would take a look, oh and the fellow who wrote the book called "Hacker's diet" (also the founder of AutoDesk/AutoCad) should do a version of his free software with the free online book now, for this N810, as this software is a perfect app for the device) once the GPS is taken off of it... I is a mistake to bundle the GPS with the new keyboard, and a bigger mistake as well to take away the SD card slot for the smaller one... see:

i understand that you cannot gps navigate without paying a separate subscription fee, that the out-of-the-box gps functions only as a "you are here" service.
Is this true? Its a big deal breaker for me.
Question I have, if anyone has tried this or know whether it can be done, can you place an internet call between a N800 and a N810? Is it possible, theoretically possible, not possible? Got an N800 already, and would like to get an N810 for the keyboard, but can they talk to each other?
