So you got IT2008 on your N800. Good for you.

It has come to my attention that a handful of InternetTabletTalk users pulled the MAC address from the dmesg output to snag the MAC address and use that as their own Device ID to get an N810 image from Nokia's site. They're using that image on their N800 tablets.

Clever thinking, but I request in the future that people try not to use the information I post like this in the future. You see: It's now my fault that the N810 flash image leaked to the public before it was ready. Sure, it's possible some people found the MAC address a different way, but we all know that Nokia treats the Internet Tablet's MAC as a serial number and it's unethical to use someone else's serial number to get software.

Nokia: I apologize for being careless about posting the dmesg output. The file in question is pulled and I hope the users are kind enough to obey their EULA's and serial number representation in the future. I hope this doesn't damage our relationship too much.

*edit* A couple readers responded and showed me other locations people have posted N810 MAC addresses, so I'm not the only sucker here. Still: it's a good idea to hold off until an official release/announcement. You never know what may be bricked or fixed.

p.s. Happy Birthday, Quim Gil!

Hi Thoughtfix,

don't get angry - i think a lot of N800 owners (like me and a lot of other guys in germany) decided to buy an N800 regarding your good videos and reports for this device - so Nokia could'nt be cross with you :) and there are a lot of IDs around the web ...

And this is the open source community with a lot of ideas and great efforts in programming (and hacking ;) such nice devices like the n800 - this is why i have a n800 instead of an iPhone :)

regards
Carsten

PS: my n800 run still with OS2007 ;)

This is what happens when Marketing takes thing in charge; functionnality of hardware is crippled to "segment" the market.
This is what Apple tried to do with the iPhone and iPod touch. Still hackers found a way.

Now Nokia releases a N810 which is pretty much the same as the N800 and they expect people to behave??

Nokia should just release this already; I am not going to buy a N810 just so I can get the software 2 weeks before than on my N800. I will buy it because it's nice kit though.

You don't really need to know exact MAC of the N810 device, since nokia is checking only first 3 bytes.

It just spoils it for the rest of us. I'm waiting for the offical upgrade, but it makes it so hard to resist!

You're right to remove the dmesg output, but someone posted a method to "generate" a correct mac-address :\

Look here: http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9816300-7.html?tag=nefd.only

commenting on same link as above -

nothing you did - I got it with one searched on google for n810 and it was 4th listing to the hack at CNET - they should be in trouble with nokia.

Sorry, it's a MAC address, not Nokia's intellectual property. Or am I going to have to ask for their permission to use my N800's MAC address when I do MAC-level filtering in my firewall?

Anonymous: That's not the point. Entering someone else's serial number for software is not ethical. That's all I am saying.

One other point. There may well be reasons nokia has not yet released os2008 for the n800. I will give you an example of catch 22s I found.

I want to keep and use a copy of os2007 on my n800 - I have it setup to boot on an sd card. If I install os2008 on the internal flash all is fine from the os2008 point of view. However the os2007 copy's wifi no longer works... On os2008 wmv, youtube and flash work, mp4 & mpv are choppy (were ok on os2007)... I also get lots of annoying popups warning me that entering data from javascript is not secure.

All in all os2007 works better here - at least for now.
