Canola2 out, OS2008 concerns, and show cancelled.

It's a busy time!

The first beta of Canola2 is out. I saw an earlier beta and am so impressed that it may replace my iPod touch as an in-car entertainment device. I'll download the latest soon and give it my usual treatment in video.

OS2008. What can I say? That article yesterday was passed around more than a hockey puck (thanks, everyone, for linking to me) but it only covered the installation and features and not so much with software installation.
  • Downloads are STILL terrible. I don't know what happened here, but Nokia needs to contract a good CDN (not the one you chose) for high bandwidth delivery. In fact - Keep all your sites on a CDN all the time and just pay for overage when you get bandwidth spikes like this.
  • Repositories are still getting hammered as well. I am getting numerous reports of Python and others still being wholly unavailable.
  • Input methods have changed quite a bit. I do rather miss the fact that stylus taps on the main menus no longer open "stylus sized" menus. Jonathan of maemoapps.com pointed out that some "missing" input methods come from a full system restore. Apparently there's a bug. If you flash to OS2008, start fresh until this is fixed!
  • Eugenia of osnews reports that video support is not what it should be - especially with H.264. She and I started talking about this and she sent me some videos over to test. I haven't had a chance to hack on them yet but will report my findings to her and here.
So we see there are a few stumbling blocks on this OS release. Nokia and the developers have a good chance to fly or fall in the next week or so. We'll see what happens. In the meantime: You do remember how to file a bug, right?

Finally - I was expecting to have more ready for the live show tonight but was slowed down by bug hunting and troubleshooting. With that in mind, tonight's scheduled live show will be postponed until I can catch up - Most likely until late next week. When is a good time for everyone?

I have been studying the Nokia n810 for a couple weeks now. I originally looking for a GPS for my car but stumbled upon the n810 and have found it very impressive. At this same time I was also looking at getting a Asus Eee pc. Now I am wondering if I could replace both devices with the n810. I love the idea of having a tablet that runs linux and has a keyboard. But, can I truly use the n810 as an reliable in car navigation GPS even if I pay the $130 - 3 year subscription fee? I do not have a data plan on my AT&T phone but am looking at one once they get a bit cheaper which I here is coming. So could you recommend a n810 for someone like me. I also have access to plenty of open wifi spots in my area. I am also looking at the development side of the tablet as I am in the process of improving my python skills.

so many - like me - will get a N810 for a christmas present why not 12/26 or 12/27 for the next show and you can present a newbies beginner show - ok maybe not exactly but you get the idea.

Thankfully, I haven't had nearly all of the issues that everyone is reporting. I was patient last night (rather late) and most of my repos worked at some point or another. Python 2.5 runtime only took two tries to install... Then maemo Extras went down, but I can wait.

Oh, I also did a full backup restore without issue (I think -- I'm still waiting to hear back about one thing).

This is what I like to hear timsamoff, I figured most of the issues are user related and I am sure impatiences plays a part. Simple fact is, if you have gotten stuff to work the others haven't then its reproducible. You may also be a realist about your purchase and truly understand what you bought into unlike others that are hoping a perfect diamond just got delivered into their hands.

Well said Cody and it's good to see the interest of another realist.

The N810 (and N800) is a diamond in the rough. To some it's treasure, to others it's trash. Definitely a "your mileage may vary" sort of experience that requires homework upfront prior to purchase, and the ability to see past the blips and bumps. I recommend it. You sound like the ideal owner.

My new N800 ($179 from buy.com New) was delivered today. I'll do the upgrade tonight. I'm coming from Symbian S60v3, WinMo6 - I'm sure I'll have fun tonight since I have the day off tomorrow!

yea!

Keep us posted on how your upgrade goes and your experiences with OS2008. I assume you have some technical knowledge since you automatically plan on re-flashing a brand new device while expecting this. You also said you have an entire day off tomorrow ;) Good luck and let us know how the n800 OS2008 compares.

(from the Guy that bought the $179 N800).

I got the N800 intact. Beautiful device. The first thing I did was to get the OS binaries...after trying for 1 hour to get the product ID to go through and get to even a list of available downloads, I was finally able to download - after 3 hours and ten minutes.

Usually when I flash a WinMo, Palm or Sybmian device, it takes about 10 minutes to flash the ROM. This one took about 2 minutes. And since I had no experiece with OS2008 and previous releases, I thought I was screwed.

The device booted fine and when I saw the new them and "startup wizard", it was awesome! Yeah.

I proceeded to first connected the N800 to my N95-1, FLAWLESS. I also was able to browse my N95 directory structure (images).

Like others on this board, the downloads are horrible. I'm not familiar with repositories, but I'm assuming that the maemo repository is corrupted during one of my downloads of Canola. Pidgn was installed after 15 tries and 20 minute download (remember those 9600 baud modems? it was worse!!!).

I've been trying Canola2 forever and I still get the file corrupt error (like many others).

I love this thing. I'm returning (maybe) the iPod Touch I bought the day before.

Funny enough, during the long 3+ hour wait for OS2008, I had my N800 OS2007 configured (no downloads) and was having a great time.

I'm looking forward to spending more time with this bad boy.

I went to bed at 4am. And I ended up going to work because our department (where I'm the boss), had a Christmas lunch parter (I forgot!).

Oh my god, the new OS download is SO SLOW - and had problems with new update wizard recognising device. It's download attempt probably 5 or 6 - saying 333 minuted left to go on what's normally a reasonable broadband connection. Please, Nokia, do something about this!
