I had an idea when I went to CES 2008:
- No hard drives.
- All Linux
I deviated from that - adding a Nokia N95-3 (which is Symbian, not Linux) to the mix. I don't know what my readers thought of it, but I think it went well. Here's how I did it:
- Mobile broadband was provided entirely by using the N95-3 on AT&T's HSDPA network. I tethered over Bluetooth to an N800 (then, starting on Monday, a borrowed N810) and tethered over USB to my Asus Eee.
- My entire Flickr photostream tagged CES2008 (65 photos) taken with the N95-3 and automatically posted using Shozu moments after.
- All live video (21 of them) recorded on the N95-3 with Qik.
- Short posts to my Jaiku feed and to both blogs were from the N810.
- Longer posts, long Email reading sessions, and any real sit-down time was done with the Eee PC.
All my high-resolution, telephoto, or macro photo was taken with my Powershot S5-IS and is now being sorted for future posts. Two videos (One on the LimePC and one on Splashtop) were also taken with the Powershot. Overall, I say I generated just as much content as I had hoped from the show floor with the equipment I had. I actually could've gone without the Asus Eee, but sometimes it was just nicer having a bigger screen and a laptop form factor.

Do people actually watch your videos? I vary rarely watch videos when online, due to most of my online time being spent at work or on an N810. Similarly, recorded interviews when there's no transcript.
I *much* prefer reading: I can quickly scan the text to see if there's anything of interest to me; effectively pause, fast forward or rewind at will; come back to it later; bookmark it; copy a portion to another document etc.
Your video blogging on the move is very cool and geeky, but am I alone in disliking it? I may be, I accept :-)
Thanks for all information!!
I have now also got my Nokia N810!!
Do you know if is possible to use any tool when blogging from N810 in my blog at blogger.com?
@andrew well I was certainly logging in daily to get the latest video's that Dan had posted from the show. I feel it is better getting small updates from the showfloor, rahter than all in one go when the blogger gets home, adn by that point the moment has already passed, and readers are sick of hearing about CES.
@Dan, thanks for all the show coverage, I look forward to your 'show round-up' post/video (if you are doing one of course)
The only minor niggle, and it's not your fault of course is that the streaming of the Qik videos (not just the live ones, but the uploaded ones as well) was jerky to say the least, but I'm sure that will improve with time, and as Qik improve their bandwidth.
Other than that the linux only, no HDD experiment worked pretty well IMO.

@steve_r: perhaps I'm just too Web 1.0, and not Web 2.0 enough.
Our office doesn't really encourage headphones (we're supposed to be working and/or talking to each other about work), and playing Dan's dolcit tones across the office certainly wouldn't go down well.
Of course, it's not just tabletblog - many interesting things (reviews, interviews, etc.) on other sites are being published as either sound or video embeds. Personally, I just find the barrier of entry too high, and the usability too low to spend my (limited) time listening/watching them to see if they're interesting to me. I can evaluate a piece of text for interesting keywords in a couple of glances.
I thought it went great. The bits from the floor went well but I'm really looking forward to the Nokia interview and Dan's thoughts on the prototype MID and UMPC devices he saw on the show floor.
Again - well done!
I add to ove nordstrom: any client for off-line posting to blogger? anything like WordPy for wordpress we can use for Blogger or just plain blog by mail?
Re CES I truly appreciated your video on benchmarking the new Q1 ... eh..eh..eh

And video is more difficult to understand for non native english reader
First, let me say that I rather liked Dan's overall mobile blogging "product" from CES. The videos he did post weren't very long, although some additional comments or tags on uploaded photos would have been nice.
I have overall mixed feelings about video blogs / video reviews. At first, I didn't like them at all, preferring to read a review. I now find that when I'm researching several similar devices and trying to pick one out, having in-depth video reviews can give me a virtual hands on experience, especially with devices not generally available in retail stores.
For actual video blogging (mobile), I prefer short clips, no more than 1-2 minutes. For device reviews, I'm getting pretty happy with 5+ minute videos, mostly because I'm only watching them because I'm actually interested in the actual use of the device and I'm close to making a decision. I certainly wouldn't go around watching every video review I stumble across.
So I have to wonder, if I get an Asus EEE, and like it, if I decided that the EEE is small enough, do I need a Nokia? I really hate tiny screens.
