Back in Business (and mobile WiFi alternatives)

That's me and my new Nokia N810 Internet Tablet lovingly named Raptor.

I have a big write-up and video to do on ultramobilegeek.com tonight (it's a how-to for installing World of Warcraft on the Asus Eee PC - destined to be popular) so will begin configuring/charging the N810 a bit tonight and will start software reviews this weekend.

For us lucky enough to own a Nokia N95 or other high-end Symbian phone, there's new beta software called JoikuSpot (no relation to Jaiku) that will turn your unlimited data plan into a mobile WiFi hotspot. It works but I've had a few stability/routing issues on certain sites. For a more robust solution, I temporarily have a CradlePoint PHS300 mobile WiFi Hotspot in house and will have that review on Ultramobilegeek too.

Yes. The N810 is here. More software reviews, real-world tests, and on-the-street impressions will be posted shortly.

It was about time to get the N810, don't you think? I can't live without it anymore :-)

As I do not own a cell at all (but had one from my company for a week) I thought, that what I am really missing is not 3g in the device but a companion device that is just a umts/edge to wifi router with battery.

So JoikuSpot is close to what I want, but I really don't need the other features of the N95 like cell and mp3 and so on - so it's not for me, yet but a really good idea.

Just a short note, as you already wrote about the gps lockon time when reviewing the N810 pre-unit. I bought wayfinder license and tested a bit. In Germany (South-West) the N810 took almost 15 Minutes to get a gps lock. So it has not been improved.

Greetings Dan:

Sorry for this offtopic question.

Do you have any updated news about Lime PC.

Is there an office in USA for this company?

Regards Robert

mflaig, why not just get a cheap, compact 3G phone and connect through bluetooth?

Even lower end models can have 3G nowadays.

neoncherry, well because I really don't need a phone and for something like the CradlePoint I could just get data only contract and wouldn't have to pay the 20-30eur per month extra for the phone.

umts/hsdpa data only flat in germany is a "5gb fair flat" which costs 50eur.

cheap phones do not support hsdpa and therefore umts has a latency of over 300ms instead of under 100ms.

this can make the difference for on the go video/voice over ip and even ssh sessions.

Any luck getting Joikuspot to work with N800/N810? I can connect it to my laptop, but not to any of my IT's. I've searched, but to no avail. Let me know of your experiences on this one.
