My N800 got stoned

I mentioned that my N810 took a trip to Amsterdam with a friend. Well - some things happen in Amsterdam, as shown by the photo above.

He told me Wayfinder was precious to him on the trip even though that device was not upgraded to include the route navigation. I haven't retrieved the device from him yet - but I will make sure I clean it up well when I do. Clearly, I (and Nokia and Wayfinder) do NOT endorse drug use. I will say that a good GPS and internet tablet could be very handy if you find yourself (legally) baked out of your gourd in a foreign country.

Reminder: Wayfinder is still hosting a contest in which a sweet Sony VAIO laptop and more prizes in a video competition. Has anyone tried their Facebook application yet? I want to but only three of my friends in Phoenix have Internet Tablets and it's hard to coordinate a test of this with them.

Hi Dan,

Love the blog, but I gotta say I'm a bit uncomfortable with this post. Even though you say you don't endorse drug use, the mention of drug use, photo of drug use, and saying that your N800 "got stoned" IMHO doesn't send the right message and minimizes the seriousness of drug use and potential abuse.

Why do so many tourists need to use drugs when they are here in the Netherlands?

Anyway, I hope you had a good time and informed your N800 well about the risks of drug use :-)

I really like your blog.

I have to agree with Brian on this one... even though the activity was legal in the place where the photo was taken, it doesn't send a good message. Since you are in the process of looking for new employment, this might not be the best time to have such a post on a public blog.

(It's also not immediately clear that you are talking about a friend and not yourself. Since the guy in the photo seems to have a similar body shape to you, I immediately thought it was you in the photo!)

I have to disagree, the only thing serious about recreational drug use are uninformed people that do stupid things. This is a legal substance and legal practice where this photo was taken and is no different then if he had been drinking a beer. Theres a good chance the wayfinder wouldn't have helped him if he was plastered trying to wander back to the hotel but that would also be irresponsible behavior. One can be baked and still function if he properly understands whats happening to him and doesn't go into a panic attack. I am not advocating driving a vehicle or taking anyone else's life in your hands while baked. Thats just a no-no.

Potential abuse for any activity exist. People play WoW way to much, some people eat to much, other people push rock climbing to the limit sometimes killing themselves in an accident, but we deal with it. People have addictive personalities for anything in life and its not health but drugs also rank up there as an "escape" but isn't that what a hobby is? an escape?

Love the humor.

Lucky guy: your "friend". FYI: Using joints etc. (ask Brian for the etc.) is stricly forbidden in Amsterdam and NL. You will be treated by the police as an alcoholic drunk (if caught). In practice: NL police is only actively testing cardrivers etc, but will put you in prison if misbehaving !

Selling of course is not against the law! (Well, in fact it is, but up to 5 grams is allowed, only in controlled places.)

Dutch history is full of these examples of practical calvinism! (slaves, pirates, colonialism... Selling New Amsterdam to the Brits for Surinam ...)

Oh, I informed the ITT community about your behaviour in Amsterdam !
Hope you don't mind !

As always: Have fun. Abel. And keep the blog moving !

For brian:

There is a saying for children:
If you don't look it's not there !

Sorry, I have to say this:

Hypocrism is always an guarantee for more misbehaviour:

Massachusetts 2003 : 574 drugrelated fatalities on 6 Million inhabitants, or the

Netherlands with 140 drugrelated fatalities(2001) on 17 Million inhabitants.

The winner is .... (Certainly not the victims above)

See, hear and talk ! The only way that helps.

Abel.
