iUnimpressed

On a rare rainy Friday morning in Phoenix, the AT&T store on Cave Creek and Beardsley in Phoenix had coffee, water bottles, some folding chairs, and donuts for those in line. The store only had 40 iPhones. I was number 37 in line. It finally activated later in the afternoon.

Without actual world experience, previous comparisons between the N810 and iPhone were incomplete. $199 is finally the right price point to make the purchase for the sake of comparison. After a few days, I see distinct advantages and deal-breaking disadvantages. I know that the tech crowd here is sick to death of iPhone coverage so any comparisons will be posted "elseblog." As soon as I have some, I'll post a link on TabletBlog - but only once.

I really don't like that people say the iPhone is "only" 199$. The real price is much higher, here in Belgium it is not allowed to sell a phone together with a contract and the iPhone costs 545€. This is the real price! So if you compare, remember this!

From day 1 of the original iphone I said that $20/month was too much to pay for a toy. I don't mind paying more up-front, but I refuse to pay monthly for a "toy".

Now the 2-year price and the monthly price are both up in the 3g model.

As swatje says, the iPhone is NOT $199, its actual price is about $600.

The $199 is just the first installment in a 2 year contract, you're effectively buying it on credit and then making the repayments on a monthly basis.

Apple could just as easily have said the iPhone was $0, because the 2 year compulsory contract would give them plenty of time to claw back the cost of the phone (and they get a share of your phone bill too).
