I think their device would be a larger and thinner Nokia device.
I agree that a N800 with a larger screen and a bigger battery is exactly what is needed. This might end up costing less than the N800.
A4 sized (none of this weird screen resolution stuff. I want the web, not a movable window into it), as thick as a magazine and about as light.
WiFi, instant on, instant off, and just a web browser. Multi-touch display with an onscreen keyboard that doesn't suck.
A slab of hardware capable of running Firefox with Flash and Google apps with no slowdown.
No need for multi gigabyte storage drives, just a reasonably specced processor and a big cache of RAM. The rest can live in flash.
The device shouldn't be multifunction. It shouldn't also double as a media player, word processor or have people trying to ram KDE into it.
It should prevent me from having to pick up my Macbook just to check my mail.
The N810 is close, very close. If it had a bigger screen and faster processor it'd be almost ideal. That is its purpose afterall :)
I would have said a paperback sized unit would be a better option than a magazine sized one.
I want something I can throw into a bag rather than a pocket.
I agree with the faster processor. Get a VIA or Atom chip in there.
The idea from Nokia is good but needs further refinement.
Paperback sized would work, so long as the screen is the major part and not wrapped in a large bezel.
I don't particularly want to take mine anywhere, it'd be something I can use in the house quickly.
Ideally it should also be 100% waterproof so I could use it in the bath, or at least not be paranoid about spilling things on it.
I like the current size. I have my N810 in my pocket a lot.
I agree with the waterproof by the way. I recently bought a waterproof/shockproof camera and I really love that. Not just for taking it in the pool, but just for being able to put it on a wet counter or washing some dirt off.
Faster cpu will end on less autonomy, as larger screen size.
I think n810 is really a very good choice !
and i like it every days !
I have a N800 and I love it (until I can't buy a N810 :p)
I think this project is a good idea. Even if I love my N800, I think they are talking about an exclusive web device (with no other features like there are in maemo).
So, it's the reason I'd like a 10" screen and a flat device to use it everywhere at home or to travel it in a bag.
Spot on, I agree with one hundred percent of that statement. There is a lot to be said for professionalism, something that N800 and N810 tricks deter from most of the time.
