Nokia announces Ntropic Nseries phone/tablet harmony (as if)

Tablet owners are thrilled about Nokia's new Ntropic (pronounced 'entropic' - a concept of thermodynamics) software product for Nokia Internet Tablets running OS2008 "Diablo" and Nseries S60 phones. The open-source, exstensible software is currently available as a free download for Internet Tablet and Nseries phone owners.

Ntropic's features are exciting:
  • Ntropic Sync: Message, address book, and media synchronization between tablet and phone.
  • Ntropic Connect: Automatic wireless managent on the tablet (switching to HSDPA when WiFi is unavailable)
  • Ntropic Awareness: Enhanced mapping features with location awareness, allowing users to find local businesses based on their location. Locations with phone numbers available will have the option to call the business.
  • Ntropic Location: GPS assist, allowing N800 users to use their phone's GPS for map software or allowing N810 users to extend the accuracy and speed up satellite locks.
  • Ntropic Image: Lightweight photo editor for downloading photos from the phone, minor editing (cropping, rotating, annotating) and automatic upload to major photo sharing sites.
This new software finally puts Internet Tablets in the spotlight as the premiere Mobile Internet Device and raises the bar on what competing companies must offer. The only reported flaw with the software is that it simply doesn't exist beyond this blog post. Ntropic is a piece of wishful thinking -- but maybe it will be reality one day. We can hope.

you really had me jumping up and down with joy!
very bad that gnokii does not support the s60 3rd edition phones
for now I guess i will live with my python scripts which sends incoming call notifications from my n81 to the n8x0

That was just mean...

I want that.

Really mean. Bad bad boy. But at least I'm awake now.

I have a N82 and it is an outstanding phone together with my N810 - "Ntropic" would be more than just icing on the cake.

PS: You forgot the "Ntropic Phone" for N810-based in-car phone applications... displays incoming SMS on the N810, allows you to dial using the touchscreen, and makes the N810 act as a speakerphone...

too good to be true. :-(

+1 tom2, I want the N810 softwares to emulate a bluetooth :
- handsfree,
- keyboard,
- mouse,
- GPS,

Playing with our expectations like that? It wasn't funny AT ALL.

That was mean...I totally believed it for a minute there. I mean, I was shocked, but excited, and I don't even have a compatible phone!

that was cruel, really. The selfone proyect covered some of the phone-tablet symbiosis, but it seems rather dead right now. (rotten vaporware smell) Would love to use it im my car as a means to answer my cellphone, handsfree. Headsets have never been in my loving side, speaker would be much nicer. ALL the hardware there and no software to control it.....WHY MUST YOU RAISE OUR HOPES? sniff*

ThoughFix - kudos to you - for highlighting in the most sensible way (as if it really exists) the basic software that SHOULD exist for Tablet and N series phone integration. This is something which everyone expects (even if not discussed more often), and the most logical progression that Nokia should look at - integarting 2 devices which cover 2 specialized areas and in that way, extend both devices functionality theu software integration.

I really was stoked, and felt - "AT LAST", except for the let down.

I hope Nokia reads your blog on this and the commenbts showing the exasperation of what cou;d be, but didn't.

I am trained to not get excited until I see a link confirming the announcement, so no harm done :D

But yes, Nokia should be coming up with more applications for the Tablet series of devices.

This is great news!

Naughty naughty man!

I'd like to echo Tom2's comments about control over the phone from the tablet.

the mobile web server does some of that, but it was slow and clunky, and I have never managed to get it to work over bluetooth, so the tablet needs to be on wifi to connect. Also running the server ties up the phones data connection so I have no 3G access from my tablet. Now bluetooth pan is released for diablo, it maybe worth trying it again.

I was thinking I'd have to get myself a new Nokia phone for a moment there. Too bad the majority of them for North America networks suck (where "suck" means are flip phones and/or don't support 3G), except for the N95 of course.

As for me, sounds pretty cool. I hope this will be true some day. Then I would recognize Nokia as a true leader on the market. Who is both "not evil" and drives innovation. Such app will give incredible power to n8x0 + Nseries phone tandem and a sort of thing lots of users will be happy to see.And with open source nature, some people will also want to improve and develop this app further than Nokia can itself.

As a lame idea... btw, maybe there is way to adapt N8x0 e-mail app based on Modest to deal with SMS and MMS as well? This probably not awfully hard and I like current mail app :)

Man, you made my day for a second, and then you were able to destroy it in a moment...

It's clear that nokia is missing an important piece of cake by not giving this kind of devices the hability to link each other... an IT combined with a N series phone, the idea makes me feel nervous and excited!

Yes Please!

And have the table be able to initiate and answer calls, and display the caller-ID info. As well as sending and receiving the SMS/MMS messages on the tablet as though you were using the tablet's built-in IM functionality. (through "Ntropic", not through a separate gnokii based app or something)

Oh, and, with support for E series phones, too.
