Fourth Internet Tablet released on…

Feb 16, 2009.

That’s my bet. The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona starts then and Olli Pekka Kallasvuo, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nokia, is delivering a keynote.

Granted no one can confirm or deny that speculation. Indicators seem to be in place – such as the progress of the Maemo 5 platform, recent price drops of the N810, and the age of the N810 in the face Netbook competition.

Netbook competition? Yes – that’s what I am putting in there. Maemo Internet Tablets and Netbooks are geared for different sets of needs, but the “middle consumer” who wants a mobile device but without specific parameters will choose a Tablet OR a Netbook – not both. That middle consumer is actually bigger than the Tablet or Netbook markets themselves.

If you happen to be in Barcelona, try to make it to the Mobile World Congress. Even if there is no new Tablet, there are some major players in the mobile space delivering keynotes. I look forward to reading the coverage.

Thats exactly what I thought too today when I visited Nokia flagship store in Helsinki. There were no n810 devices on the shelves so I concluded that maybe they have released a new one and came to see your blog if you would have information of the new device.

I think you are right about netbooks taking over. I hope the next tablet has a larger screen.

I own a tablet and a netbook and thats very fine for me.

I never take the netbook with me if I go to the office and back or just do some activities which assume a short bus/train ride. A netbook never would be a pocket mp3 player and surf/mail device which I just have to get out of my pocket.

On the other side I’ll never miss again my netbook for surfing at home at the ouch or on voyages…

What I really don’t need is a desktop system or a big notebook :-)

    > announced maybe, but not
    > released

… which doesn't matter much. All they need to do (as soon as possible!) is to release official pictures of the device, a list of technical specifications plus a name.

They do that all the time with their phones, and there's nothing wrong with it. It lets you know what's ahead and if it's worth waiting for.

The fact they didn't make an announcement much earlier (Q4/2008) was, IMHO, a serious mistake.

I was in the Nokia flagship store yesterday and they were still selling the N810 for 290 euro (a good deal cheaper then their usual finnish list price).

On the one hand I hope there is a new tablet in february, on the other hand I just bought another n810 to replace my dev one that broke (dropped in water) so Im kinda hoping it will be a bit longer before a new tablet is released as I feel like an idiot for not waiting a few more weeks :)

It’s also possible that the recent price drops for the n810 are because the n97 will soon be hitting the shelves.

you tease. I saw the partial headline in my rss reader “4th tablet released” and rushed to read the item only to be disappointed.

(fondles my n800 to reassure it that it’s not going to be forgotten)

I wish it were, but would we not expect some administrivia evidence of the device to show up in the FCC paperwork heap this close to such a release date?
