iXtraction

I’m a very poor Nokia Internet Tablet blogger.

In the last months, some great software has been released and updated. Maemo 5 development is well underway. Things are, in general, moving right along. I’ve been silent through it.

I could pitch excuses about how I’ve been busy with the new job and such, but I’ll get right to the core: I am not using my Internet Tablet nearly as much as I used to. I started using the iPhone 3G when I arrived in California just for the convenience alone. Now I find myself accidentally sucked into the Apple ecosystem – and I’m tired of it. I want out.

Here’s a promise: I’m going to write a series of articles all about the extraction from Apple to other devices. It will cover Email, messaging, microblogging, music, video, podcasts, and apps. I’m going to wait for a maemo 5 tablet or an N97 first, though. Both promise far more than my current N95-3 (with the neglected NAM firmware) and the Nokia N810 can offer. Budget permitting, I’ll get ahold of each (or both?) and get the articles cranked out. In the meantime, make sure to watch the maemo news page for all the latest on Internet Tablets.

Not going to try a G1 before you try the N97?

I really enjoy your youtube videos, I´ve watched most of them and they are helping me decide wether I get one of Nokia´s IT or not (I´m inclined to, but my wife thinks it is a waste of money). I hope you keep up posting videos in the near future! They are very helpful!

Why bother coming back. To me. you have joined the dark-side and the iphone will never be a piece of kit I will use but obviously you are converted. Why force yourself to blog on something you do not believe in?

The Nokia tablet had a good run (as did the Zaurus before it). Time passed.

I completely understand. As much fun as the my internet tablets are, my Iphone has proven more reliable in day to day use.

Nokia, please finish what you started.

I can’t blame anyone for being seduced by the iPhone – the simple fact of the matter is that it works and it works well. Contrast that with Nokia and Maemo, where the out-of-the-box applications are awful, and Nokia continually tinker with the OS without giving any real focus to the woeful eMail/RSS/Media/Browser applications. Using the tablets day-to-day is a chore, not a pleasure. We only do it because we believe in the project, but secretly we know the future is not with Nokia.

So is it any wonder people buy Apple? After all, they just want something that works now, not in 2+ years time. Or maybe never.

    Arthur:

I couldn’t disagree with you more about Maemo. It’s not perfect, it needs more finger friendliness … but using it is not a chore. Nor did I move away from Maemo due to anything you’ve said (I moved away from Maemo because it’s not a phone, and I only want to carry one pocketable).

The iPhone, however, is simply not acceptable. Screen is to small, application ecosystem is too closed, lacks some key application features, and there’s no way to use a physical keyboard with it.

If Nokia came out with a Maemo based phone (such as a larger version of the N97, so that it retains the 4.1″ 800×480 screen) then I’d be on it. Or if the next version of the NIT, with built in GRPS/EDGE/HSPA, can be used as a full phone via Google Voice and/or Zer01, then that’d be good.

Though, I do wonder about the degree of dedication Nokia has to Maemo based platforms. It’ll be interesting to see where that goes… But, with the emergence of Mer (non-Nokia driven ports of Maemo to non-Nokia devices), that might stop being a concern. A separate OS that takes on the missing pieces of Maemo, and on a wider selection of hardware, would be an amazing win, IMO.
