New poll – ad supported Internet Tablets

Wow – it’s been a long time since I posted a poll. The voting is on the right side of tabletblog.com (if you catch me through an RSS reader) and asks:

Would you use an ad-supported Internet Tablet?

  • No – it’s far too annoying
  • Yes – it doesn’t bother me
  • Yes – but only if the internet service was free
  • Yes – but only if the service and device were free

I go back and forth on ad-supported devices. Advertising dollars on blogs have gone to nearly nothing – but that’s because my target audience is too tech-savvy to view the ads and far less likely to click. I wonder what kind of market an ad supported Maemo tablet will have and what the click-through ratio would be?

    If the device were free and it was possible to replace the adware with free software, why yes, I would certain buy that for $0 :)

    (of course, the previous comment illustrates why ad-subsidized hardware is a horrible idea and has always failed.)

    Yes, but only if the device and/or the internet service was free.

    Not unless it’s exactly the hardware I want, with the hardware being free or heavily subsidized, and I’ll put up with ads.

    * 4.1″+ 800×480+ Tilt screen
    * Full phone capability (non-VOIP voice, SMS, 3G data), with quadband GSM, and quad WCDMA (euro, asian, NAM, T-Mobile-USA). Add WiMAX and/or LTE as those technologies mature.
    * Dpad on the face
    * 5 row keyboard with dedicated number row
    * some form of video out and USB host, so I can attach it to a KVM
    * Maemo as the OS
    * Dalvik for running Android apps
    * LOTS of RAM
    * LOTS of internal storage
    * LOTS of battery life
    * portrait camera on the back
    * accelerometer for auto-screen rotation and the like
    * charge via USB client

    But, if it doesn’t have everything I want, why would I compromise by accepting ads? or paying an unsubsidized price?
