Nokia and Intel team up - promise to kick butt on mobile Linux

Today was the wrong day to sleep in a little: Nokia posted a press release with Intel promising several very important things to the mobile space:
  • Open source collaboration, including cooperation between Moblin and Maemo.
  • Intel licensing Nokia 3G technology
  • Increased focus on standards-based pocketable devices.
Wow. I love the Intel Atom. I love the Maemo tablets. I am swimming in excitement for the future right now.

I'd prefer ARM Cortex over Atom to be honest. With the right distribution (eg. Debian based) that supports both x86 and ARM it shouldn't matter to the end user what architecture their device ends up using, however I would prefer ARM to remain available while it has the edge in power consumption, which it will likely have for at least another 18-24 months if not longer.

Nokia is innovating by staying with ARM, a netbook with ARM could be great - I hope they don't sell out to Intel any time soon.
